My Learning Perspectives
Learning as an adult can be incredibly rewarding, despite the challenges that accompany it. I have built my life around helping people, so wanted to become a counselor educator to help adult students learn how to help other people heal and flourish. Consistent with many adult educators, I believe that adult learners learn best when they are able to construct their own meaning from the information they receive and are able to apply information to their current academic and professional work. I take this a step further by employing a transformative learning theory in my teaching, because my job as a counselor educator goes beyond imparting information. As a counselor educator, I am responsible for helping future counselors develop their own professional identities as effective clinicians, advocates, and scholars. Changing the lives of students and clients requires counselors to develop cognitive complexity, and to conceptualize their students and clients in ways that consider how systems have impacted them. This begins within the classroom when interacting with myself as the instructor and other students.
Teaching Experience
